Got the wedding invitation? Yes, of course you are happy for the lucky couple, but the next thing that you think about is what to wear? Not only that you always have the impression you’re wardrobe is completely useless, now you have an additional problem: what is appropriate to wear? Well, it is important to learn to interpret the wording of the wedding invitation, there are differences between “white tie”, “black tie”, “formal” and “beach formal”. So, I will try to help you.
“White Tie” is the most formal dress code and weddings are rarely that formal. Men should be all black and white. Black: a long jacket with tails, bow tie, formal shoes. White: gloves (appropriate for dancing) and pique vest. And, of course, tuxedo. Women should wear formal dark brown or black ball gown, of course it should be full-length. Makeup, jewelry and accessories may be dramatic and glamorous.
“Black Tie” is formal dress code, but more casual than white tie. It is usually appropriate for evening affairs. Men should wear a tuxedo and a bow tie (black). Patent leather shoes and cummerbund are recommended. Women should wear black or brown evening gowns or chick cocktail dresses, but should ask the bride (or the bridesmaids) about the appropriate length of a dress or gown.
“Formal” means less formal than “white/black tie”. This means, for a male guest, that tuxedo is not required, but that it is still appropriate. A formal dark colored suit and a tie are recommended. When it comes to female guests, a formal cocktail dress in brown, gray or black tone, a dressy suit or a long dress are appropriate.
“Beach Formal” means the couple has organized an elegant beach wedding. So, think about what you would wear to a fancy restaurant on a summer day. Men should wear a linen shirt, a summer suit, khakis or linen pants. Sandals are appropriate and tie is not required. Womens clothing is summer formal: knee-length sundress and flat sandals. Makeup, jewelry and hair should be everyday casual.
